Methodology

Life Expectancy

We use 77 years, the average life expectancy in the United States according to CDC data (2022). This varies by country, gender, and lifestyle factors.

Waking Hours

We assume 16 waking hours per day, based on the average adult sleeping 7-9 hours. Social media time is calculated as a percentage of waking hours, not total hours.

Books Read

Average book length is ~90,000 words. Average reading speed is 238 words per minute. This means ~6.3 hours per book. We round to 6 hours to account for focused reading.

Language Learning

The US Foreign Service Institute estimates 600-750 hours for Category I languages (Spanish, French, Italian) to reach "Professional Working Proficiency." We use 600 hours for conversational fluency, which is a lower bar.

Walking the Camino

The Camino Francés (most popular route) is ~800km. At a typical pace of 25km/day walking 6-8 hours, it takes ~200 hours of walking over 30-35 days.

Limitations

This visualization assumes consistent daily usage over remaining lifetime. It doesn't account for: productive social media use, usage changes with age, or time that might be spent on other passive activities instead. The goal is awareness, not precision.
